The other day after 10 minutes into my massage session, I started to get lower back pain. It was hard for me to stand, but I did not want to stop my session, I had to do something immediately to stop the pain. I sensed that I was somewhat dehydrated, so I drank some water and took several deep breathes and within only seconds the pain subsided. I was able to get through the massage session without a problem. After the session, I did a few stretches and drank plenty of water and was able to continue my day that was full of massage appointments.
The human body is composed of 70% water and can become dehydrated from water loss as low as 2%. Water is essential to our general wellness, supporting everything from organ functions to coordination. It also keeps the mind alert and active. It is recommended to drink 8 – 12 glasses of water per day and an extra 8 oz. for every cup of coffee you drink. As you continue to increase your water intake make a point of noticing what happens. Chances are it won’t take long for you to feel the difference. Hydration influences energy and mood, so when you feel sluggish or down reach for a glass of water for a pick-me-up without the crash that comes from sugar and caffeine.
During a massage, toxins are moved throughout your body, so remember to drink an additional 2-3 glasses of water to help flush them out so you will not feel tired or sluggish.
Be Well!
