Many health insurance companies are offering benefits for Acupuncture. This includes Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Kaiser, Aetna, United, and Signa. Federal employees seem to have some of the best plan options, with some plans offering 24 visits per year and 85% coverage for services.
Health plans are also increasingly paying for Fertility Acupuncture, as well as Acupuncture for prenatal issues like back pain, nausea and breach presentation.
To find out if you are covered, call the member services number on the back of your card. Ask for benefit eligibility for Acupuncture. Also ask how many visits you get per year, if there are restrictions for diagnosis, and if you can receive Acupuncture from a licensed practitioner, not just an MD.
There is not a sure-fire way to know your benefits unless you call OR have a Federal Employee card with an R in the member number and a 104 or 105 plan code. These lucky ducks get the super benefits mentioned above.
