Aromatherapy is the ancient art and science of using essential oils- the aromatic extracts of plants and flowers- for promoting health and well-being. Each essential oil has a unique chemical composition. The term Aromatherapy has been in use for a relatively short period of time, however the practice of using aromatic plants and their extracts for both spiritual and physical care, dates back to our earliest history. The action of an essential oil on the body is holistic, combining both physical and mental aspects. Unlike most conventional medicines, essential oils work together with all parts of the body to complement natural healing and to restore emotional and spiritual balance.
Some of the most common and frequently used essential oils are:
Lavender- relaxing, also useful in treating wounds and burns
Peppermint – good for muscle aches and pain, asthma, head cold and bronchitis
Eucalyptus – helpful with respiratory problems, such as coughs, sinus, sore throat and colds; also helps to boost the immune system
Tea Tree – excellent antiseptic and anti-fungal oil
Lemon – uplifting and also clears the mind
Clary Sage – natural pain killer, relaxing and can help with insomnia; also balances hormones
Some easy ways to incorporate essential oils into your daily life are:
- Add a few drops to your bath (best to add to a bath salt instead of directly into water)
- Add a few drops to an unscented Massage oil or lotion and apply to skin
- Add a few drops to a diffuser to scent a room
- Add a few drops in the palms of your hands and place hands under your nose and inhale for 3 deep breaths.
- Add a few drops to a steam facial to help open up sinuses
- Add a few drops to a hot or cold compress and apply to desired area on the body
