Gardening’s “Backlash”

It is so wonderful to drive along the streets of Takoma Park and see the many flower gardens in bloom and in some yards, there are the makings of vegetable gardens. Whether one is preparing the soil, planting or weeding, the urban gardener may find these activities hard on the back.

If you experience gardening “backlash,” aka back pain, from lifting, stooping, kneeling or whatever, it can be very useful to see an acupuncturist to get some relief for the acute condition. Acupuncture works to restore the body’s natural ability to heal itself and it does this without the aid of drugs. Often a few, hair thin needles in the right spot will free up the strained muscles, relieve the inflammation, and you’ll soon be ready for your next weekend’s gardening project.

While acupuncture treatment is often very helpful in relieving symptoms, it can be even more useful in treating the cause of the weakness that allowed your back to become strained in the first place. So after a course of acupuncture treatments, we would expect that you would be constitutionally stronger and thus much less vulnerable to a reoccurrence of back pain even after making the same demands on the body. Yes, imagine getting rid of your back pain for good.

Of course, acupuncture is not only useful for treating back pain. All kinds of pain located anywhere in your body responds to acupuncture treatment. And if your insurance policy includes coverage for acupuncture, the carrier is likely to reimburse for pain issues.

Generally, with acute pain, we’ll treat you twice per week and as your condition improves, the interval between treatments is expanded. Herbs can also be helpful in moving blood and reducing inflammation as well as strengthening a deficient condition.

Acupuncture continues to gain popularity in this country because it is an effective treatment of acute and chronic pain.
