It is better to give.

I can hardly contain my excitement. I am heading to New Orleans! No, not for good. Just for a few days. And while I am very excited about the music that moves you and the food that soothes the soul, I am most looking forward to volunteering. I love giving. An opportunity came my way to assist with the free health care clinic that is held each year during the same time as hurricane Katrina struck. It’s kind of sad that this still has to happen in order to provide health care in this modern day but that is a totally different discussion.

I have a new burst of energy knowing that I get to assist people with getting possibly the only health care they might receive this year. Even though I am not a doctor, I get to be the smiling face that welcomes people, guides them, holds their hand or give them the smile that reminds them that they matter and that someone truly cares. While I won’t be giving treatments, I will be giving of my time and energy and that is very rewarding in itself. Although I will be missing the Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial dedication, I will be doing what he stood and died for, giving yourself for equality and services for all. So if you are ever in a slump and need to get out of it, give until you feel better. It always helps.
