Last week for Halloween, I went trick-or-treating with my niece and older sister. It was perfect weather for my favorite night of the year and I was in a festive mood. My niece dressed as Alex Russo from Disney’s The Wizards of Waverly Place, and my sister and I followed her from door to door as she collected candy. I spoke to each and every ghoul and goblin that passed by us, and chatted up all the neighbors in the neighborhood. At one point during the evening, my sister commented, “My my my, aren’t we being extra nice.” My response: “What can I say, I’m really happy.”
To be honest, I was a little surprised to have admitted this out loud. Truth be told, I’m a bit of a worrywart, guilty of waiting for the other shoe to drop. In fact, the past couple of years leading up to my 30th birthday have been everything but positive and cheery. The last stretch of my 20s was filled with severed relationships, battles with depression, physical stress, and even some heartache. Thankfully, life after the beginning of my 30th year so far has been liberating and, well, much more fun. It’s ironic that I have the planet Saturn to thank for this new way of being.
Saturn in Astrology is not the easiest planet to contend with on a regular basis. With nicknames such as Lord Karma, Dark Knight and Father Time, this planet’s placement in our birth chart tells us where we face some of our biggest obstacles. The difficult energy associated with Saturn can be described as a manner of tough love. Saturn helps us to overcome our challenges, through discipline, structure, realism and constriction. This planet insists that we embrace our Karmic lessons by facing them head on; doing so ensures that we bravely acknowledge and manage all of our fears and insecurities along the way.
Every 29 ½ years, Saturn returns to the sign it was in on the day we were born. Just as we celebrate our Solar Return every birthday (the return of the Sun to our sign); we also welcome our Saturn Return around the age of 30. This active period corresponds with a time of change and transition, and we can feel its affects as early as age 27. Major events occur as we begin to set the foundations for the rest of our lives, and this becomes a time of self exploration, seeing where we fit in this world. General manifestations include (but are not limited to): marriage or divorce; giving birth or experiencing death; starting a new career or ending an ill-fitted profession.
The resulting change from a Saturn Return can be unsettling. By far, this is probably the toughest and most memorable astrological event that we experience in our lifetime. Surrendering to the lessons of this transit is the only way to cope. Afterwards, an inner grounding is guaranteed to prevail, leaving us feeling light and infused with bucket loads of confidence. Sorting out the required work now, prepares us to better handle our 2nd Saturn Return at age 60. So be sure to make a solid effort, those of you pushing 30 – life really does get better when all is said and done, and happy days are set to return!
